From the floor of the UN General Assembly, Mr US President Joe Biden today appealed to world leaders to stand by Ukraine against Russian invaders.

“Russia believes that the world will tire and be allowed to brutalize Ukraine without consequence,” Biden stressed in his speech, asking: “If we allow the dismemberment of Ukraine, is the independence of any country safe?”

Biden drew applause when he said the US and its allies would stand by Ukraine in its fight for freedom. “Russia is entirely responsible for this war,” he said. “Russia alone has the power to end this war immediately.”

The American president argued that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the occupation of Ukrainian territories by Russia violate the founding Charter of the UN, the basic principle of which is respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was present in the room and applauded Biden’s speech, is expected to meet his American counterpart on Thursday at the White House.

According to US media, the Ukrainian president is also expected to go to the US Congress, where congressmen and senators have been debating in recent weeks the sending of new US military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

In the House of Representatives, where the Republican party has a majority, Republican lawmakers are expressing disagreements over the new aid mission.
