Two people died on Friday in wildfires raging in northern Sicily, where a hotel where 700 tourists were staying was evacuated for several hours, the Civil Protection agency and Italian media said.

A 42-year-old woman was killed trying to save her horses in Cefalù, east of Palermo. Her father and brothers were with her, but she probably got disoriented due to the heat and smoke and fell into a ravine.

The Italian news agency Ansa also reported that a 68-year-old man died trying to escape his house engulfed in flames in Balestrate, west of Palermo.

About 700 customers of the Costa Verde Hotel, near Cefalu, were evacuated on Friday afternoon and taken for safety reasons to a local stadium. But they were able to return to their rooms around 2am on Saturday after the danger had passed.

The meteorological service is predicting rain from today and for several days in the region, which will help the work of firefighters in northern Sicily.
