“In March 2020, Sidney hit Brenda in the head with an iron skillet and then stabbed her nearly 30 times in the neck,” the prosecutor said.
Powell, a former Mount Union University student, sobbed in the courtroom when jurors found her guilty.
Police found the unfortunate woman inside her home seriously injured on March 3, 2020. Both she and her then 19-year-old daughter were taken to the hospital, where Brenda succumbed to her injuries.
He suffers from serious mental health problems
During the trial, her defense argued that Sidney suffered from schizophrenia and therefore could not be held responsible for the murder, with an expert saying the 23-year-old suffered a psychotic episode when she killed her mother, whom she considered her best friend. her.
A psychiatrist hired by prosecutors disagreed with the diagnosis and stated that Sidney was not insane at the time of the crime. But he acknowledged that he suffers from mental health problems, including borderline personality traits, and anxiety disorder. Steven Powell, Sidney’s father and Brenda’s husband, had asked prosecutors to reach a settlement without a trial. But the prosecution said it wanted the jury to decide. “He stabbed her in the neck several times. This is appropriate. It’s clear he wanted to kill her.”
Defense counsel declined to comment after the verdict. Powell’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 28. She faces up to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years and additional time for her conviction for tampering with evidence.
