Senator Robert Menendez and the New Jersey businessman pleaded not guilty to bribery and corruption charges in federal court in Manhattan.

The US Senator Robert Menendez arrived Wednesday in a Manhattan federal court where he is to answer charges that he used his privileged political position to advance secret Egyptian interests and make “arrangements” to three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gold bullion and a Mercedes.

Menendez arrived at the federal courthouse holding the hand of his wife, Nadine, while people gathered around the building holding banners and signs reading “resign.” Menendez and his wife, who also charged in the case, they made no comment while arriving in court.

The New Jersey Democrat will make his first appearance in federal court amid mounting calls from his colleagues to resign from Congress.

Menendez he was forced to resign as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee after being indicted last week, says the abuse of power charges are baseless. He added that he is confident he will be acquitted and has no intention of leaving the Senate.

The former appeared before a New York federal court and pleaded not guilty. Daibes also appeared in court, while Uribe is also expected to be brought to court.
