CCTV footage shows a man waving the girl away when she approaches him
A video showing a young girl walking for help after she was raped has sparked outrage and disgust in India.
The anger, however, is not only about the criminal act of rape, but also about the fact that some people refuse to help the girl. CCTV footage they show a man waving his hand away from the girl when she approaches him.
However, according to police, someone eventually helped the girl, who had been wandering for help in the city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh for more than two hours.
The medical examination to which the girl was subjected showed that she had been raped.
“Five people who came in contact with the girl are being questioned,” Ujjain Superintendent of Police Sahin Sharma told news agency ANI on Thursday, adding that the girl was “confused and could not initially give details of her whereabouts”.
Police have not yet confirmed the girl’s age.
The video, which surfaced online this week, shows the girl walking down a street while bleeding. At one point, she approaches a man who appears to wave at her, before walking away again.
Police say they are examining other CCTV footage from the area to trace the route the girl walked before getting help.
Authorities said the girl had been reported missing in the city of Satna – more than 700 kilometers from where she was found on Sunday.
She was helped by Rahul Sharma, who is reported by the media as a Hindu priest. He said the girl was bleeding when he found her.
“He couldn’t speak. Her eyes were swollen,” Rahul Sharma told news channel NDTV.
“I then asked what had happened, but she spoke in a language I did not understand; I also gave her a pen and paper, but she could not write anything either,” he told The Hindu newspaper.
He said he gave her some clothes and called the police, who took her to the hospital.
On Wednesday night, police said in a statement that the girl’s injuries had been treated and that she had undergone surgery, without giving further details. The BBC tried to contact police in Ujjain for comment.
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Misra said on Wednesday that the girl’s condition was stable.
Opposition leaders in the state condemned the incident and criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for women’s safety. State BJP chief VD Sharma said the police would take “strict action” and “criminals will not be able to escape”.
Priyank Kanoongo, chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, told reporters that he had contacted local police and administrative officials in Madhya Pradesh to find out more about the incident.
Activist Yogita Bhayana, who has worked with many rape victims, told the BBC that was trying to locate the girl’s family and contact them to offer support.
