H Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloniin her statements from the summit meeting EUMED-9 which is taking place in Malta, referred to the results of the discussions on immigration and refugees. “There was a will for a serious and quick treatment of immigration. We are looking for the next, substantial steps”, emphasized the Italian Prime Minister.

“We say “yes” to the repatriation policy, but it must be done at the European level, as it has already begun to be done with the visits of Commissioner Margaritis Schina to a series of African countries. At the same time, cooperation with Tunisia is important and, as far as I know, the relevant European resources will be released soon”, he added.

“EUMED-9 countries are helping to make progress, which we want to turn into concrete projects,” Meloni said and reiterated that redistribution, for Italy, is not a priority, while the main priority for her country is the external dimension.

“The Pact on Migration and Asylum improves the previous situation, but we consider the amendments requested by Germany on NGOs to be a step backwards. We asked for time and we could, then, also ask for an amendment on the basis of which the country responsible for the migrants must be that of the flag flying the NGO ship that collects them,” Meloni told reporters. The Italian Prime Minister underlined that “in Malta too, many made it clear that NGOs are not all the same”.

Regarding her proposal for a naval mission in the central Mediterranean, she underlined: “I mean, of course, that it should be done in cooperation with African countries. There is the Irini mission, which is working effectively, while the third part of the European Sophia mission, which was never activated, could be implemented. However, we must discuss with the North African authorities.”

Speaking about Tunisia, the head of the Italian government underlined that it must be ascertained whether European financial aid can be disconnected from the country’s agreement with the IMF. With reference, finally, to the Italian economy, he stated that “there is no risk of a new technocratic government being established” and that “Italy, next year will grow more than the European average, while its spread has started to go down” .
