Armenia has asked the European Union for assistance to help it deal with refugees arriving from Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan regained control of the region last week, Italy’s prime minister’s office said today.

More than 100,000 refugees have arrived in Armenia after Azerbaijan launched a military operation to regain control of Nagorno-Karabakh, the head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said late on Friday.
Armenia has asked the EU for temporary accommodation and medical supplies, the Italian prime minister’s office said in a statement, adding that Rome was working to promote stabilization in the region by favoring dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The announcement also states that Italy immediately activated the civil protection system, starting the process of locating goods to support the population in need and which are in the Italian Civil Protection Service and respond to the needs expressed by the country.
