Lithuania’s cabinet has announced that it will declare a state of emergency in Parliament on the border with Belarus, as thousands of migrants try to cross into European territory in both Lithuania and Poland.

Under the current procedure, the Seimas (parliament) can declare a state of emergency at the request of the government. According to the proposal of the Ministry of Interior, the state of emergency will take effect from midnight on November 10 in the border area, and at a distance of 5 km from it, as well as in the accommodation of immigrants from African and Asian countries who entered Lithuania. via Belarus. It is proposed that this scheme be set for a period of one month.

“We are afraid that there will be no escalation of this kind of action on the Polish border in the near future, and that it will be armed in nature,” Piotr Miller, a spokesman for the Polish government, told reporters yesterday.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said today that the migrant crisis on Belarus’ borders threatens “the stability and security of the entire EU”.

“Sealing the Polish border is in our national interest. “But today the stability and security of the whole EU is at stake,” the head of the Polish government wrote on Twitter.
