Mexican writer and former diplomat Andres Roemer, accused of rape and sexual assault, was arrested today in Israel and will be extradited to Mexico, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced.

President López Obrador did not provide further details.

In June 2021, Mexico requested the extradition of the former diplomat, who also holds Israeli citizenship, following an arrest warrant issued by the country’s Supreme Court. Since February of that year, accusations against him had begun to multiply – there are about 60, according to an organization for the defense of women’s rights – after a dancer, Itzel Schnaas, accused him of sexually assaulting her.

The author “vehemently denied” this first accusation, posting on Twitter (now Platform X) but then withdrew from the social networking sites as complaints mounted.

The women claim that the former diplomat, who is now 60 years old, used to invite the victims to his home or office, under the guise of business.

Andres Roemer was also a UNESCO goodwill ambassador but this UN agency severed all ties with him.
