The number “64” formed by their shorts as soon as the two gymnasts embraced was not considered by many to be a coincidence
A photo of two Chinese athletes, Lin Yuwei and Wu Yanni embracing after their match has been the cause of censorship in China.
In particular, the two athletes after the 100-meter hurdles race at the Asian Games in China decided to hug and congratulate each other for their effort. Then their shorts formed the number 64, a number that for many was no coincidence.
This number refers – for many in the Asian country – to the protests that took place in Tiananmen Square on June 4 (6-4) 1989, according to the BBC. That day, soldiers killed hundreds of citizens demonstrating for democracy in Beijing. To this day, it remains unclear how many people were killed that day, but estimates by human rights organizations put the number at several thousand.
Discussion of those bloody incidents remains taboo in China, with authorities regularly deleting all mention of the subject from the internet. Younger generations of Chinese are growing up with little to no knowledge of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
The photo of the two athletes quickly disappeared from Weibo, China’s Twitter, although some articles still feature the photo.
