Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today linked Hamas’s attack on Israel to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and criticized Iran for both conflicts.

Israel was caught off guard on Saturday when the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas launched a major offensive.

“The only difference is that there is a terrorist organization that attacked Israel and here we have a terrorist state that attacked Ukraine. The stated intentions are different, but the essence is the same,” Zelensky said via video link to his Parliamentary Assembly. NATO held in Copenhagen.

Iran denies supplying Russia with Shahid kamikaze drones to use in Ukraine and maintained that he was not involved in the weekend attacks in Israel. Ukraine has said about 1,000 Iranian-made Shahid drones have been used by Russia in the past six months.

“Iran cannot say that it has nothing to do with what is happening in Ukraine if he sells Shahid (drones) to Russia. Iran cannot say it has nothing to do with what is happening in Israel if its officials are expressing support for what is happening in Israel,” Zelensky said.

The US Secretary of State said there is no evidence that Iran is behind the recent attacks on Israelbut said there are longstanding ties between Tehran and Hamas.

Zelensky called for Western unity in the face of world events.

“This is not the time to withdraw from the international arena into internal strife. This is not the time to isolate ourselves. This is not the time to remain silent or pretend that terror on one continent does not affect world affairs,” Zelensky said.

For her part, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the annual session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly that her country is working to “broaden and deepen” a coalition of countries that have pledged to deliver F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

“As long as Ukrainians are ready to fight this war for our freedom, let us resolve that there will be no war fatigue in our transatlantic community,” Frederiksen said.

The Netherlands and Denmark have led an effort to train Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16 and later deliver fighters to Ukraine to help it counter Russia’s air superiority.

In late August, Norway also pledged to deliver F-16s to Ukraine, while 11 other countries, including the United States, have said they will help train Ukrainian pilots to use the fighters.

The Danish Prime Minister also stated that NATO and the EU should better coordinate the supply of arms and ammunition within the Union and the military alliance.

“NATO is the cornerstone of our collective security, but at the same time we need to do more in Europe. It starts and ends with NATO, but within Europe and within the European Union we need to do more,” he said.
