The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, will travel to Egypt tomorrow Saturday, as he said from Washington where he is, while he asked for support for this country that has a border with the Gaza Strip, which is bombarded by Israel after its attack Hamas on October 7.
“Egypt needs support, so let’s support Egypt,” said Michel, who is in the US to participate in a White House summit later today with US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
He clarified that he will go to Egypt tomorrow to meet with the country’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Michel also expressed his support for President Biden’s “leadership” and reiterated the EU’s support for Israel’s right to “defend itself” under international law.
The European official also referred to the “challenge» which is the eventual input refugees in Egypt and stated that he expects that during today’s summit there will be “important exchange of information” on the subject.
Asked if Europe is speaking with one voice on the Israel-Hamas war, Michel said: “the answer is yes,” referring to the common position expressed by European leaders during their Tuesday night conference call on the issue.
In the meantime, von der Leyen in a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington she emphasized that “we are on Israel’s side“, reiterating that Israel has the right to defend itself in the face of “horror” committed by Hamas with her attack.
