New letter of distrust against Boris Johnson from a Conservative MP

by

Thanasis Gavos, London

Tobias Elwood became another member of the British Conservative Party who publicly announced that he was submitting a letter of no confidence against Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the relevant party body, the 1922 Commission.

The former Undersecretary of Defense and current chairman of the parliamentary defense committee thus becomes the most prominent member of the ruling party who is in favor of the ouster of Boris Johnson.

Overall the Tory MPs who have stated that they have submit a letter of no confidence approaching tenwhile more are those who have publicly criticized the Prime Minister or have clearly withdrawn his support for him.

54 letters of no confidence are required to automatically provoke an internal party vote to oust the Prime Minister. Only the President of the 1922 Commission, Sir Graham Brady, knows at all times exactly how many letters have been submitted.

Announcing the decision to submit his letter later in the day, Mr. Elwood told Sky News this morning that “it’s time to resolve” the crisis caused by the ‘partygate’, that is, the lockdown parties in which he is involved and Boris Johnson.

Recent reports from the Guardian and Telegraph put the prime minister in three more rallies being investigated by the Metropolitan Police.

“It’s horrible for Conservative MPs to have to constantly defend this against the British public,” Elwood said, adding that the party “will inevitably slip into a very bad place.”

He called on the Prime Minister to take control and to provoke a vote of confidence in his person.

Mr Elwood’s move comes a day after a letter of no-confidence was tabled by MP Peter Aldous.
