A faster resolution of the conflict in Gaza could help limit a conflict that could prompt people to join the ranks of Palestinian militants, the US president’s top military adviser has said Joe Biden.

General Charles K. Brown, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Israel’s stated goal of its military operation in Gaza – the complete destruction of the Hamas militant group that rules the enclave – is “a very broad order. ».

But he added that Israel Focuses on Targeting Senior Hamas Officials; something that can be achieved more quickly.

“I think the longer this goes on, the harder it can get,” Brown told reporters before arriving in Japan today, making his first detailed comments on the month-long conflict.

Brown, who took over as head of the US military just over a month ago, expressed confidence that Israel is complying with the laws of war in Gaza.

He also stated that the Israeli armed forces have room to improve the explanations they give publicly for their behavior and that he has raised this issue with his Israeli counterpart.

“There is room for improvement based on what we’re seeing,” Brown said. “What I talked to him about is how to show—not only with video, but also in their statements about the strikes—why they’re hitting some locations, to give more information about the context in which the strike takes place.”

Asked if he was concerned that the high death toll among Palestinian civilians might prompt people to join the ranks of the militants, Brown said: “Yes, I am very concerned about that. And I think it’s something we have to pay attention to.”

“That’s why when we talk about the time frame – the sooner you can get to the point where you stop hostilities, the less chance you have of someone among the civilians wanting to become the next member of Hamas,” he said.

General Brown, however, did not explicitly advocate a short campaign or say how long he thought the Israeli operation in Gaza should last.

He has previously overseen air campaigns in the Middle East, including during the battle to retake cities in Iraq from Islamic State militants. He stated that the military campaigns may drag on longer than expected.

“Almost every conflict I’ve been involved in during my military career … has lasted longer than most people imagined. So we have to prepare for that,” he said.
