The skull of a Triceratops – one of the most recognizable dinosaurs – dating back 68 million years, will be auctioned by Christie’s in Paris next Tuesday.
The skull of the herbivore Triceratops was discovered in 1998 in South Dakota, USA and was named “Baby Jane” by its previous owner.
It is estimated that the sale price will vary between 300,000 and 500,000 euros. The highest price for a Triceratops skull was €572,000 at a Christie’s auction in London in 2021.
The title of the most expensive dinosaur fossil is held by the complete skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex that in 2021 was sold for 29 million in New York.
“All children – but also older children, like us – recognize a skull like this,” said Hippolyte de la Feroniere, head of the auction. “There are certainly complete skeletons, but for collectors, it might be more convenient to have a skull in their living room,” he added.
With a length of up to 9 meters, Triceratops was one of the largest dinosaurs of the Ceratopsis family.
