Armenian police are investigating her attempted arson in a synagogue of Yerevanset against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

According to the police authorities, on November 15, someone reported by phone that unknown persons were trying to set fire to the entrance of the building, on Nar Dos Street, Yerevan. The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into causing material damage.

Rima Varyapetyan, the spokeswoman for Armenia’s Jewish community, said the attack took place early Wednesday, when the synagogue building was empty. In a video, several people can be seen throwing some kind of fuel at the entrance twice, but they are unable to start the fire. “There is no serious material damage,” the spokeswoman assured. “We are angry, the Jewish community has never faced problems in Armenia (…) it is clear that some forces have appeared that are not working against the Jews but against Armenia,” he added.

Varyapetyan claimed that the video was rebroadcast by accounts on Azerbaijani social networking sites. “From these sources the rabbi was informed (about the arson attempt) and he called the fire department,” he said.
