Diplomatic ferment on Ukraine escalates as news of Russian attack on Ukraine intensifies German Chancellor Olaf Soltz is leaving for the United States tomorrow, Monday, with the Ukrainian crisis expected to dominate his meeting with US President Joe Biden.
Soltz has been criticized for being lenient with Russia. According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, Solz will have to wait for the American president to recall him.
“We can expect that that Joe Biden will ask the German chancellor to be stricter with Moscow. “He will repeat that the NordStream 2 gas pipeline is dead if Putin attacks Ukraine,” the magazine said.
Soltz’s decision not to offer weapons but helmets to Ukraine and not to clarify the fate of NordStream 2 has drawn criticism. But the German chancellor later agreed to include the pipeline – which would carry gas from Russia to Germany via the Baltic – in the list of possible sanctions against Moscow in the event of an attack on Ukraine.
Emanuel Macron will visit Moscow tomorrow to discuss Russian security demands with Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin has announced.
Russia has gathered about 70% of military capacity required for a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in the coming weeks, US security officials told Reuters.
