A convoy of ambulances and a bus from Egypt is en route to pick up Israeli hostages from the Red Cross, an eyewitness told CNN Saturday night local time.

The convoy is heading from the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing to the Gaza side.

At the same time, a representative of the Israeli army said that the process of releasing the hostages held by Hamas is underway.

A total of 20 hostages, 13 Israeli citizens and seven foreign workers in Israel will be released. Hamas has assured that the process will be completed before midnight after a long delay which the organization attributes to Israel’s failure to comply with the terms of the Qatar-brokered deal.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid al-Ansari said in a post on Platform X that 39 Palestinians would also be released, including 33 minors and six women. The Israeli hostages to be released are eight children and five women, he clarified in another post.

Late tonight, Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani spoke by phone with US President Joe Biden, at the latter’s initiative, with whom he discussed “the progress achieved in implementing the humanitarian ceasefire”. According to a White House spokesman, Biden spoke with the emir and the prime minister of Qatar about potential obstacles to the implementation of the agreement and the mechanisms that could be put in place to resolve any problems. The spokesman said that after the phone call the US president was informed that the release of the hostages was proceeding and the International Committee of the Red Cross was taking steps to receive them.
