Negotiations on the formation of a coalition government in the Netherlands after his surprise victory Hurt Wilders the elections are currently deadlocked after the resignation of the man appointed to conduct them.

Gom van Strien, who was appointed by the far-right leader, was accused by the Dutch media over the weekend of committing fraud within his business.

These conditions and the time necessary for him to respond to the charges “are not compatible” with the mission he was given, said this senator from Hert Wilders’ PVV party.

“I have therefore informed Hert Wilders and the Speaker of the Parliament that I am resigning from my position with immediate effect,” he added.

Gom van Strien was due to officially begin his mission today by meeting Hert Wilders himself, whose party came first in the November 22 election.

The meetings were subsequently cancelled.

Wilders’ task of persuading other parties to work with him was already difficult given his radical positions against Islam, immigration and the European Union.

Although somewhat toned down during the election campaign, the PVV is calling for a ban on mosques, the Koran and headscarves, as well as a referendum on the Netherlands’ exit from the EU.
