Shirt worn by the late Diana, Princess of Walesher engagement portrait could sell for up to $100,000 at auction next month.
Diana wore the shirt in 1981 for a photo shoot to officially announce her engagement to then Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, now King of the United Kingdom.
The photo, published in the February 1981 issue of Vogue magazine, was taken by Anthony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, who was married to Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II.
The long-sleeved blouse is made of crepe silk chiffon and has a pink satin ribbon that ties in a bow below the collar. The front has loose pleats, while the long sleeves end in loose cuffs.
In 2019 it was among the exhibits at Kensington Palace in the ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ exhibition.
Designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel created the shirt by repurposing one of their dresses, according to the auction house.
The buyer of the shirt will also receive a signed letter of authenticity from Elizabeth Emanuel and a copy of the 1998 book Diana: Her Life in Fashion by Georgina Howell.
The auction house expects it to sell for $80,000 to $100,000.
The ‘Julien’s Auctions and TCM Present: Hollywood Legend’ auction held in Beverly Hills, California and online from December 14 to 17 will sell Diana’s evening dress, created by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury.
