In the rival political camp, the Cooperation Framework, which unites Shiite pro-Iranian parties, had also announced its intention not to participate in today’s vote.
Twenty-five candidates are running for the presidency, but two experienced politicians stand out: Hosyar Zebari, a former minister from the PDK, and outgoing President Barham Saleh, of the rival Kurdistan Patriotic Union (UPK) party.
However, Zebari’s candidacy was suspended “temporarily” by the court yesterday, Sunday, following an appeal against the MP based on allegations of corruption.
