Nelson de Sá: Behind Lula, Bolsonaro is now ‘courting the poor’, reports Washington Post

by

The Washington Post went to Sertânia, in the interior of Pernambuco, to report that, “Stumbling in polls, Bolsonaro is courting a surprising demographic: the poor.” It is on the home page (below), with a photo by Bloomberg of towels stamped with the current and former president, for sale in Pará.

“Nearly half of the city’s residents are receiving a cash benefit provided to the poor, an amount recently doubled by Bolsonaro,” the correspondent describes.

Running out of time, he began to prioritize poor voters, an “unlikely target for a right-wing nationalist who has spent his career waging culture wars and glorifying the Armed Forces.” Bolsonaro declares himself “the president who created the biggest social program in the world”. Rebate WPost:

“But this is the reality: being poor in Brazil has rarely been so difficult. The pandemic has left the country more impoverished, more unequal and more unemployed. Inflation has risen above 10%. The cost of gasoline in some places is at record levels Nearly 20 million report having recently gone hungry. As people fall behind and lose their homes, new slums are growing across the country.”

CRAZY GOVERNMENT

The new edition of The New Yorker magazine brings an extensive profile of Caetano Veloso, under the title, in the printed edition, “The Caetano effect”. In the caption of the photo (above), a statement: “I’ve always perceived the uniqueness of Brazil. I perceived a mission to take to the world”.

The envoy spent a week in Rio and describes him as someone who “revolutionized the sound and spirit of Brazil”, with a “pretty face”, “shy”, “suspiciously modest for a world-famous musician”, with “one of the most music hallmarks”.

He hears from him that life under Bolsonaro “is bad, as bad as in the dictatorship, but it’s a different situation”. People in power “are nostalgic for the dictatorship, but back then we had a coup. Now we are under crazy government during a democratic period.”
