In a letter to congressional leaders, the White House budget director now refers to a specific estimate
The White House has issued a warning that the US is set to run out of aid funds to Ukraine by the end of the year, saying a failure by Congress to approve new support will bring Kiev to its knees, the Financial Times reported.
The warning from Salanda Young, the White House budget director, in a letter to congressional leaders on Monday, is about a more concrete assessment of the reducing Washington’s financial and military support to Ukraine;
“Without congressional action, by the end of the year we will run out of resources to get more weapons and equipment for Ukraine and to provide equipment from US military stockpiles”Young said in her letter to political leaders of both parties.
“There is no magic pot of funding to meet right now. We’re out of money – and almost out of time”he said.
President Joe Biden’s request for emergency funding 106 billion dollars on his top foreign policy priorities, including Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific, remains deadlocked on Capitol Hill because of growing Republican opposition to helping Kiev.
Some senatorsamong whom support for Ukraine remains strong, are trying to negotiate a bipartisan deal that would include aid for Kiev alongside new immigration procedures and asylum to reduce the number of undocumented people arriving in the US through the southern border.
Even if a deal is reached in the Senate, however, it is unclear whether it can pass the Republican-led Housewhose new president, Mike Johnson, was skeptical of Ukraine funding.
“Stopping the flow of US weapons and equipment will bring Ukraine to its knees on the battlefieldnot only jeopardizing the gains Ukraine has made, but increasing the likelihood of Russian military victories,” Young told Congress.
“Already, security aid packages have become smaller and aid deliveries more limited”. . . while our allies around the world are moving to do more, US support is critical and cannot be replaced by others,” he adds.
The White House’s warning comes as EU member states struggle to reach a budget deal in Brussels that would send 50 billion euros to Ukraine, sources told the Financial Times.
