Carrot and whip of the West in Russia: Biden-Solts threats, convergence opportunities Macron sees

by

High-level diplomatic fever is under way for the Ukrainian in order to prevent any Russian military intervention in the country.

In Washington, US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Soltz sent strong messages to Moscow, while French President Emanuel Macron met in the Kremlin with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leaving a “crisis in Europe”.
Biden and Soltz discussed the sanctions to be imposed on Moscow in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine and sent the message that Washington and Berlin would respond together.

“It is important that all allies, the United States and Germany, NATO, the transatlantic alliance, speak with one voice: if there is a Russian military invasion of Ukraine, it will have serious consequences, which we have agreed on. “The cost to Russia will be high and I think everyone has realized that.”

“There will be no more Nord Stream 2”

“If Russia invades Ukraine, there will be no more Nord Stream 2,” he said. The German Chancellor did not mention the German-Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline by name, but hinted that all decisions would be made in consultation with the US and other allies.

“You can be sure that there will be no measures to which we will have a different approach. All the necessary steps will be taken and will be done by all of us.

We are completely united. “We will not make different moves,” he said characteristically.

“Leave Ukraine,” Biden urged the Americans

The US president’s urging the Americans in Ukraine, in addition to the diplomats, to leave the country because of the threat of a Russian invasion also caused a sensation.

Biden said he would never want to see Americans in the crossfire in the event of an invasion.

Emanuel Macron: Signs of convergence with Russia

In Moscow, Macron saw signs of convergence in talks with Putin on Ukraine, although, as the French president said, differences remain.

The statements of the Russian president, who described the talks with his French counterpart as “useful and substantial” and said that some of the ideas formulated by Macron could be the basis for further joint steps, followed a similar style.

Putin said some of Macron’s ideas on security were realistic and that the two would talk again after the French president’s visit to Kiev.

The French president said he had told Putin that the creation of a new security strategy in Europe should not be done by revoking the right of states to join the NATO alliance.

“Some of his ideas and proposals, which may still be too early to discuss, I think could be the basis for further joint steps,” he said. “We agreed that after his trip to the Ukrainian capital we will have a telephone conversation to exchange views on the issue,” he added.

Macron also had a good reason to say about the Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, noting that he managed to keep his composure despite the accumulation of Russian military forces near the border of his country.
