The issue of the “Blue Homeland” is brought back by Turkish academics, who claim that the islands do not have a continental shelf and also express fears about the extension of territorial waters by Greece.

“I want to believe that there is no retreat from Turkey’s positions (on the Blue homeland) as this is the worst rap in Turkey’s future. Any retreat will have such an effect as we have seen the positives of our actions, the rector of the University of Yenisehir, Yasar Hatzisalichoglou, said in a television interview.

“The borders of the Blue Homeland cover all our seas, they are the continuation of our borders” said the Turkish academic, according to SKAI’s correspondent in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis.

“Just as a speck of our soil is important, so is a drop of our seas. We we want to exploit our wealth in these places without infringing the rights of others. For the Eastern Mediterranean, we have made many invitations, President Erdogan has made them. We we have the longest coastline in the Eastern Mediterranean and it is obvious who owns the coasts there” he continued.

Regarding the continental shelf and territorial waters, he said:

“If they claim that all the islands have a continental shelf, there is no logic in that. Even if (the Greeks) extend the territorial waters from 6 miles to 12 miles – although in the Treaty of Lausanne it is 3 miles” said Hatzisalichoglou.
