A local official threw grenades during a city council meeting todayin the Transcarpathia region, in western Ukraine, injuring 26 people, it was announced by the authorities, who launched an investigation into terrorism.

Footage released by law enforcement shows a man walking into a small room where many people are already seated.

After a brief conversation, in a tense atmosphere as seen in the footage, the official pulls out of his pockets and throws objects that look like grenades on the floor. A series of explosions, smoke billows and people can be heard screaming in panic before the video cuts out.

It is a “local official” who “threw grenades” during a city council meeting in Keretsky, a village in this mountainous region, Ukrainian police explained.

Twenty-six people were injured, six of whom are in serious condition, authorities said, adding that doctors administered CPR on the attacker.

At the moment, the Ukrainian authorities have not clarified the motives of the attacker, but the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has launched an investigation into terrorism.

Today’s city council meeting was streamed live online. The attacker, whose identity has not been released, entered the room about an hour and a half after the debate began, before throwing the grenades.
