London, Thanasis Gavos

He announced the largest business donation he has ever received The British Museum, with its oil giant BP to provide 50 million pounds (58 million euros).

The money, which will be given over a decade, will go towards the large-scale multi-year renovation of the building that houses the London institution, which according to estimates could cost as much as £1 billion.

The donation was announced as Britain debates whether the fossil fuel industry should be excluded from arts and culture, at the heart of the campaign for green energy.

Environmental campaigners regularly call on the British Museum to end its relationship with BP, as have the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate.

The donation also comes at the end of a year of upheaval at the museum following revelations of the theft of at least 1,850 objects from its warehouses, the departures of the director and deputy director, and a resurgence of debate over the repatriation of the Parthenon Sculptures.
