Nicolas Maduro’s government will release 36 people, including 12 Americans, in exchange for the release by the US government of a Maduro ally, a senior Venezuelan source said today.

Maduro’s ally is Colombian businessman Alex Schaab, the source said. U.S. prosecutors say Schaab funneled some $350 million from Venezuela through the United States in a case that involved bribing Venezuelan government officials.

Of the Venezuelans to be released, 20 had been imprisoned for some time, said the source, while four of them are persons who have recently been arrested because they were involved either in the campaign of the opposition candidate in the presidential elections Maria Corina Machado or in the organization of the primary elections of the opposition in October.

All the detainees will be released on the same day, the source said.

The Associated Press reported today that the United States has already released Schaab.
