London, Thanasis Gavos

The strong winds of Storm Pia, which has been affecting the northern half of the country since dawn, are causing significant transport problems and inconvenience for the traveling public in the United Kingdom.

Wind gusts of up to 185km/h were recorded in the Scottish Highlands and in northern England almost 30,000 households were temporarily left without electricity.

Dozens of British Airways flights have been cancelled, while the railway network is suffering a lot.

In London there are cancellations and delays on northbound services from two central train stations, King’s Cross and Euston. The problems are due to a tree falling on the lines in Doncaster and damage to power lines respectively.

The suffering is compounded by the sudden strike of Eurostar staff in France.

There are many reports of trees and roofs of buildings being uprooted.

The yellow warning for strong winds covers the northern half of the UK and is in effect until 9pm local time.
