A block of flats in a district of Kiev was hit late Thursday by a Russian kamikaze drone in the sixth consecutive airstrike in the Ukrainian capital this month, according to Ukrainian authorities, who said two people were injured.

This is the first incident of its kind with victims in a long time in the Ukrainian capital. Although Kiev is the target of airstrikes practically every night, the Ukrainian authorities assure that most of the drones and most of the missiles of Russia are shot down by the anti-aircraft defense systems.

An air raid alert was issued late last night. A short time later, explosions were heard clearly in the center of the city as anti-aircraft defenses shot down UAVs, a correspondent of the German Agency reported.

Air defense warning sirens also sounded in other parts of the country.

Initially, the municipality of Kyiv announced that the anti-aircraft defense had taken action, calling on residents to stay in shelters.

An apartment building was “hit by Shahed,” an Iranian-designed drone that Kiev says Moscow routinely uses for raids, Ukrainian presidential secretary-general Andriy Germak said via Telegram.

The apartment building is located in the Solomyanskyi district, in the southwestern part of the capital, and “the highest floors” of the building caught fire, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, also via Telegram.

A man was taken to a hospital, while a second injured person was treated on the spot, he added.

The Kyiv military administration uploaded photos to Telegram showing damaged apartments. According to the same source, there was no drone strike on an apartment building, but a fragment fell that caused a fire, which was quickly extinguished.

In another district, in Kholosivski (south), a fragment of a damaged remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle fell into a high-rise apartment building, without causing any casualties.

Mr. Klitschko reported a little later that a fragment fell into a house under construction in the Darnitsky district (east), causing a fire.

The Ukrainian Air Force spoke of swarms of drones moving to different regions, in the central, western and southern parts of the country.
