Imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has been transferred to a penal colony in an Arctic region in northern Russia, his spokeswoman said today, after his supporters had lost contact with him for more than two weeks.

Navalny was located at the IK-3 penal colony in Harp, in the Yamal-Nenets region, about 1,900 kilometers northeast of Moscow, his spokeswoman Kira Yarmish said.

Navalny’s lawyer was able to see him today, Jarmis said, adding that the opposition politician “is fine.”

Navalny’s supporters, who were preparing for his expected transfer to a “special status” colony, the toughest tier in Russia’s prison system, had said his lawyers had not seen him since December 6 and had raised the alarm about the his luck.

“Many thanks to our supporters, activists, journalists and the media who are concerned about the fate of Alexei and who do not tire of writing about the situation,” said Navalny’s lawyer Ivan Zhdanov.
