The people of Budapest were surprised to see that the Danube had overflowed, with the water levels being at the highest levels of the last decade.

The heavy rain and snow that made their appearance after days of clear weather caused unusual floods in early winter;according to Reuters.

The General Directorate of Water Management of Hungary stated that the Danube reached a record level of 6 meters and 93 centimeters late Wednesday, below the 8.91 meters recorded in 2013 when extreme flooding began in central Europe following heavy rains in late May.

Although this year’s floods did not cause significant damage in Budapest, experts warn that climate change could make such floods more frequent.

If we look at the bigger picture, we can see that winter rainfall is increasing and as temperatures rise we will see less snowfall and the snow may melt earlier”said climate researcher Anna Kis, who works for the 1.5 degree project.
