Fire broke out in the early afternoon nearby at the top of Blackpool Tower, one of the most famous sights in the north of England.

Six Lancashire fire engines, the drone handling team and a rescue climbing team have rushed to the scene.

Photos online show police officers arresting a man at the entrance to the Tower, but it is unclear if the arrest is related to the fire.

Visitors to the tourist attraction had to be removed by firefighters.

Citizens are being asked to avoid the area, namely the popular Blackpool waterfront where the 158m high metal tower dominates.

Blackpool Tower opened to the public in 1894, having been inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Strong winds are blowing in the area, which make the work of firefighting difficult in addition to the great height at which the fire is burning.
