“The United States rejects the recent statements of Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, who are in favor of the relocation of Palestinians outside the Gaza Strip,” he said in a press release issued by the spokesman of the US Department of State, Matthew Miller, characterizing ” irresponsible” these positions.
US diplomacy underlined yesterday Tuesday that it “rejects” statements by Israeli ministers about the return of Jewish settlers to the Gaza Strip after the ongoing war and about “encouraging” the Palestinian population to “immigrate”.
The Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, yesterday Monday advocated the return of Jewish settlers to the Gaza Strip and “encouraging” the Palestinian population to emigrate, a day after a similar position by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
“It is necessary to promote a solution that will encourage the migration of the people of Gaza. This is a correct, just, moral and humanitarian solution,” said Mr. Ben Gvir during his faction’s work. His statements were posted by him on social networking sites.
“I appeal to the prime minister and the foreign minister, there is an opportunity to implement a plan that will encourage the migration of the people of Gaza to other countries of the world,” he added.
He also said that a Palestinian withdrawal from the Gaza Strip would pave the way for Jewish settlements to be established again in the Palestinian enclave.
These statements are “inflammatory and irresponsible”, the spokesperson of the State Department said, adding that “the Israeli government, including the Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) has told us repeatedly (…) that such statements do not reflect the policy of the Israeli government ».
The US government considers “Gaza to be Palestinian land and will remain Palestinian land,” he insisted.
Mr. Netanyahu’s government, an alliance of right-wing, far-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish formations, is also accused of increasing the burden of settlers in the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.
