A student was killed and five people were injured today when a 17-year-old high school student opened fire at an Iowa school, authorities said.

“There are six victims, one of whom ended up. The one who ended up was a student,” they added.

Four of the injured are middle school or high school students, the fifth belongs to the administration, police said.

The suspect in the Iowa school shooting has been identified as a 17-year-old student at Perry High School, officials said at a news conference.

The suspect apparently died after shooting himself. He was found by police who rushed to the school to deal with the incident “with a self-inflicted gunshot wound”. The suspected assailant had two weapons, one of which was a gun, said Mitch Mortwent, a local official.

Police discovered an improvised explosive device during a search of a school building.

The shooting occurred on the first day of the spring semester, according to the school district’s calendar.

Perry, a city of about 7,900 people, is located almost 40 miles northwest of Des Moines, the state capital.
