North Korea fired more than 60 projectiles near the remote South Korean island of Yongpyeong today, the South Korean military said, a day after Pyongyang’s first launch at the same site triggered Seoul’s response with live-fire drills in the area.

“North Korean forces fired more than 60 shells from the northwestern part of Yongpyong Island today between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. around” (07:00 and 08:00 GMT), the North Korean General Staff said. The South Korean military is warning Pyongyang not to continue these firings.

Yesterday, Seoul ordered the hasty evacuation of residents of two South Korean islands, Yongpyeong and Bangyeong, near North Korea, after Pyongyang’s military opened fire 200 times with artillery off its west coast in the Yellow Sea, not far from the disputed maritime borders of the two states.

As Yonhap news agency reported citing South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the shells today fell north of the NLL (Northern Limit Line), a line that bisects the Yellow Sea between the two Koreas and is disputed by Pyongyang.

Unlike on Friday, the South Korean military does not plan to fire into the maritime area in response to North Korea’s provocation, Yonhap reported.
