Former “Qatargate” judge Michel Cleese will stand as a candidate in the June 2024 parliamentary elections in Belgium.

Michel Clees, 68, resigned from the Qatargate case in June 2023 citing conflict of interest, recently retired and has now decided to get involved in Belgian politics.

“The former Qatargate investigator, now retired, will be the third candidate for the Parliament” announced his party “Défi” this morning during a press conference. He will be a federal parliamentary candidate in third place on the Défi list in Brussels. The Défi (Democrat Federaliste Independent) party is positioned in the center.

It is recalled that the reason Michel Cleese resigned from the Qatargate case is that his son and the son of the Belgian MEP Marie Arena involved in the case had a medical cannabis company together since 2018. Last July the Belgian authorities found in his home son of Marie Arena 280,000 euros in cash.

To date, Marie Arena has not been questioned by the Belgian authorities, despite her relations with the alleged “mastermind” of the case, Antonio Panceri.

The Brussels prosecutor’s office has not submitted a request to the European Parliament to lift its immunity, as it did with MEPs Tarabella and Coccolino.
