A woman was killed by Ukrainian shelling in the Kursk region of Russia and drones hit a fuel facility in the neighboring Ariol region, the governors of the two regions said today, amid escalating cross-border attacks.

In his statements posted on the messaging application Telegram, the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoitreports that a woman was killed by shelling in the village of Gornla near the border with Ukraine.

At least five drones were shot down today in the Kursk region, Starovoit and the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The governor of the Ariol region, Andrey Klitschoff, said two drones struck a fuel facility, injuring three people while starting a fire that was later extinguished. He reported that three drones were shot down.

In statements on Telegram, Klitschko described the incidents as a “hostile attack”.

Later the governor of the neighboring Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomazand the defense minister announced that another drone had been destroyed, without elaborating further.

Russia’s areas near the border have repeatedly come under fire from Ukraine in recent months. On December 30, at least 20 people were killed in a rocket attack in the city of Belgorod, 40 kilometers from Ukraine, according to Russian media.

Russia has also recently hit Ukrainian cities with hundreds of missiles and drones, including some behind the front lines, Ukrainian officials said.

In the latest raid this week, Russia fired 15 missiles of various types, killing at least four people and hitting civilian infrastructure, Ukrainian officials said.
