According to the British Maritime Safety Office (UKMTO), the attempted attack was carried out by drones which were intercepted by international forces deployed in the High Seas.
International forces deployed in the Red Sea intervened in a new “incident” off the coast of northern Yemen, the port of Hodaida, an area under the control of the Houthi rebels, the British Maritime Safety Office (UKMTO) announced in the early hours of today.
“UKMTO has received information of an incident approximately 50 nautical miles west of Hodaida,” in which there was “activity” by unmanned aerial systems. “Coalition forces intervened” and “no injuries or damage were reported,” the British agency added via X (the former Twitter), urging merchant vessels to proceed with “caution” in the Red Sea.
Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV network source in Yemen’s internationally recognized government’s military said earlier that Ansarullah (s.a. movement better known by the family name of its leaders, Houthis) targeted a merchant ship in the Red Sea , without going into details.
Shortly after the Israel/Hamas war broke out in the Gaza Strip on October 7, the Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen and are backed by Iran, like Hamas, said they would target in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, ships passing through the Red Sea if they have anything to do with Israel.
Israel’s main ally, the US, responded by announcing in December the establishment of an international naval coalition with the mission of protecting international shipping from Houthi attacks in this strategically important region, through which about 12% of world trade passes.
