The airstrikes and artillery shelling targeted the towns of Khan Younis and Rafah, according to a statement from the Hamas government
More than 60 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza Strip overnight by Israel’s “intense” shelling, according to a statement from the Hamas government.
“More than 60 martyrs and dozens injured in the new massacres committed this night and early morning by the occupying forces,” wrote the government’s press office.
According to the announcement, airstrikes and artillery bombardments targeted the cities of Khan Younis and Rafah; in the southern part of Gaza, where the Israeli army now concentrates its operations, as well as in other areas of the besieged Palestinian enclave.
The war between Hamas and Israel, which entered its 100th day on Sunday, erupted after the Palestinian organization’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 that killed around 1,140 people, mostly civilians.
About 250 people were taken hostage in this attack, of which 132 are still being held in Gaza. At least 25 of them are said to have been killed, according to Israeli authorities. About 100 were released as part of a truce in late November.
In retaliation, Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas and is relentlessly bombing the Gaza Strip. So far nearly 24,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in the enclave.
