Dahdu, 53, left for Egypt via the Rafah crossing before traveling to Doha
The head of the network’s Gaza office Al Jazeera of Qatar, the Wael Dahduwho lost members of his family and was himself injured during the war between Israel and Hamas, fled the Palestinian territory, as he announced to AFP.
Accompanied by a family member, Wael Dahdu left the Gaza Strip for Egypt via the Rafah border crossing, before proceeding to Doha where he is to undergo surgery on his hand after being injured in a bombing. There he will meet four of his children who arrived in Doha last week.
Dahdu, 53, who has become the personification of Palestinian journalists covering the war in Gaza, lost his wife, two children and a grandchild in a strike in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Stripat the end of October.
On January 7, an Israeli strike killed Hamza Dahdu’s son, who also worked for Al Jazeera. The next day, two other members of his family, Mohammed and Ahmed Dahdu were also killed.
According to Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 82 journalists and media professionals have been killed since the war began on October 7. Among them, 75 are Palestinians, four Israelis and three Lebanese.
According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health Hamaswhich holds power in the besieged Palestinian enclave, more than 24,285 people, the vast majority of them women, young children and teenagers, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war began.
The war erupted after Hamas Islamist commandos attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing nearly 1,140 people, most of them civilians, on the same day, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
