The Pentagon announced today that it does not believe Iran is seeking war with the United States and that Washington does not want war either.
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh made the statement a day after a drone attack on a base in Jordan near the Syrian border killed three American soldiers and wounded dozens more, which Washington blamed on pro-Iranian militants.
Singh accused Iran of allowing groups to attack the United States and said the latest attack bore the “print” of Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah. “We do not seek war, but we will take action and respond to attacks against our forces,” he said.
“We are not seeking war with Iran,” the White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby assured at the same time, without specifying whether the Biden administration intends to strike Iranian soil after the death of the three American soldiers.
“This attack represented an escalation, we must say clearly, and that requires a response,” he said.
