President Joe Biden, who is trying to get the US Congress to approve an additional aid package for Ukraine, called the president of the European Commission to thank the EU for approving 50 billion euros in aid to Kiev, the White House said today. .

Joe Biden thanked Ursula von der Leyen “and the European Union for this significant financial contribution that will greatly assist Ukraine as it continues to fight against Russian aggression,” White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

Kirby added that European Union support “is not a substitute for American leadership” as the Biden administration continues to press Congress for additional aid to Kiev.

European leaders reached an agreementa today for aid of 50 billion euros to Ukraine — aid that had until now been blocked by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, an announcement that Kiev immediately hailed as a “joint victory” over Russia.

This decision is also a message to the United States where the budget for Ukraine is currently blocked in Congress.

“I hope (this) will help make things easier” so that Joe Biden can pass his aid plan for the war-torn country, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.
