Asked how he managed to bring out the other sides of Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” Lanthimos said credit for the acting work should go to the actors and their creativity.
For “Poor Things”the way he directs, his friendship with her Emma Stone and the iconic collaborations with them Colin Firth and Mark Ruffalo, but also his cinematic future was discussed by the director George Lanthimoss, in a discussion organized by British Film Institute(BFI) in London on Wednesday night.
“I don’t really think about the subjects themselvessaid Lanthimos, when asked about where he will be moving in his next film.
“It’s more about figuring out the stories and the structures and feeling like there’s something there that interests me. Only after that do you understand what it is for yourself, since for other people it could be about something else. So it’s hard to say what the issues are».
The Greek director stated that he and his collaborators “they are interested in people and delve deeper into these kinds of social structures, behaviors and relationships».
Additionally, he mentioned his latest project, which has a title “Kinds of Kindness” and which will star Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualey and Willem Dafoe.
“We just shot this movie… which is three different stories” said Lanthimos, characterizing her “a contemporary film».
“It’s three different stories, we’re finishing editing right now. I still can’t tell you exactly what it is. But I also wouldn’t want to tell you what I thought the stories were because it makes it so small. I try not to even think about it during the process because I’m afraid it will narrow my optionss”.
Asked about his collaboration with Emma Stone, which seems to be firmly established, he said: “The funny thing is that I tell her, but she doesn’t believe me, I also thought of her for The Lobster.”
“He has this wonderful speech impediment, it’s like a slur“, explained. “And in the Lobster world this would be very critical, a very special feature. So, it could be the woman who is lying».
“We got to know each other really well, even before we shot The Favored, because we started talking about it a few years ago and it took a while to come to fruition. That’s how we became friends during that time. Then when we actually had the work experience it was obvious that we got along and that we enjoy working together».
Asked how he managed to bring out the other sides of Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” Lanthimos said credit for the acting work should go to the actors and their creativity.
“Well, once I released him, he was ready to move oni” said the Greek director, speaking of a “brilliant actor».
“He was a little hesitant, I guess, because he hasn’t done anything like this. Now that I know him better, I think he generally always thinks he’s up to no good».
“He came on strong when we started rehearsals. We had 2-3 weeks of rehearsal. He was the guy who was already there. And we had so much fun rehearsing».
Asked to comment on the appeal of “Poor Things,” Lanthimos said he was surprised.
Speaking about Colin Farrell and his performance in The Lobster, Lanthimos said: “He was looking to do different things. I found his sense of humor and general presence to be very strong. And I guess the thing about casting is that, first of all, I want to try to find people that I want to work with, regardless of whether they fit the character exactly. That’s why he had to gain so much weight. But mostly it’s about people I want to work with, get to know them and see if we get along. It’s important to find the people who have that connection with your work and with you as a person».
