The Republican president of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, made it clear on Monday that this body of the US Congress does not intend to consider as it is a draft law negotiated by Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, which in particular provides for the granting of new military aid to Ukraine.

“The Foreign Assistance Act is silent on the most pressing problem facing our country,” Johnson said in a statement, referring to the immigration crisis at the US/Mexico border.

The Senate bill provides for an additional $95 billion in spending, with the lion’s share earmarked for supporting Ukraine’s military. The issue has been debated in Congress for months and has become a point of contention between Republicans and the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden.

Republicans are demanding much tougher US immigration and asylum policy in order to agree to new aid to Kiev.

And, “absent any amendment” by the Senate on this issue, “the House of Representatives will continue to work alone on these important issues,” added Speaker Johnson in his statement.
