Ukraine’s armed forces destroyed the large Russian amphibious assault ship Tsezar Kunikov off occupied Crimea in the Black Sea, the Ukrainian military announced today.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces, together with the intelligence unit of the Ministry of Defense, destroyed the large landing ship Tsezar Kunikov; It was in Ukrainian territorial waters near Alupka at the time of the strike,” the Ukrainian military said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.

Earlier, Ukrainska Pravda, a major Ukrainian news website, reported that Ukrainian maritime drones had struck and damaged a large Russian amphibious ship off the coast of Russian-held Crimea.

The news site had released videos showing a plume of smoke rising into the sea off Crimea’s southern coast and helicopters flying overhead.

Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Khonsarenko said the ship targeted was the Tsezar Kunikov, which had taken part in Russian military operations in Georgia in 2008.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not issue a statement on this matter. However, he had earlier announced that he shot down six Ukrainian drones “over the waters of the Black Sea”.

Khonsarenko and Ukrainska Pravda did not specify when the attack took place.
