New “bell” for European leaders from the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy
The European Union must be more united if it wants a role in the Middle East, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Jose Borrell warned from the Munich Security Conference.
“The question is whether there is political space in Europe to support the two-state solution. I believe there is, but for that we should be more united,” said Mr Borrell, stressing that if Europe wants to play a geopolitical role in this issue, it should be united, as in the case of Ukraine, where her unity is extraordinary. “But here (in the Middle East), I see that there are different opinions and many member states want to play their own game (…) Without a clear perspective for the Palestinian people, there will be no peace in the Middle East and the security of Israel will not be secured by military means alone,” said Jose Borel and stressed that the West Bank is the real obstacle to the two-state solution. “The West Bank is boiling. It is possible that a bigger explosion is imminent there,” he said and asked the EU to support the “Arab initiative” for the establishment of a Palestinian state that would include both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
