A ship was hit by two missiles and set on fire today, an attack southeast of Aden in Yemen, Britain’s Maritime Safety Office (UKMTO) said.

“A ship was attacked by two missiles resulting in a fire,” UKMTO said, explaining that the attack took place 70 nautical miles from Aden, adding that US-led “coalition forces are responding to the incident”.

British maritime security firm Ambrey said it was a British-owned Palau-flagged cargo ship heading into the Red Sea from Thailand.

Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels, who control much of Yemen, have been attacking ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Madeb Straits, acting in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The US has formed an international coalition to protect shipping in the region.
