The body of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, who died last week in the prison colony where he was held, was handed over yesterday to his mother, Ludmila.

Navalny’s mother received her son’s body after first signing a death certificate saying he died of “natural causes.”
She was then given three hours to agree to a “secret” funeral for her son, or Russian authorities would take the body back and bury it inside the prison.

Ludilma, however, refused to negotiate on the manner of burial and still has her son’s body although the ultimatum has expired, according to what is known so far.

As Navalny’s representative, Kira Jarmis, wrote on platform X, she does not know if the authorities will allow a funeral to be held “in the way the family wishes and as Alexei deserves.”

“The funeral has not yet taken place. We will let you know as soon as we have news,” Yarmish emphasized.
