The German police announced today that arrested two men as part of the investigation it is conducting to identify two former members of the Red Army Faction organization (RAF) who evade capture.

However, at this stage it is not certain that the two arrested are the wanted persons.

“Their identities are currently being ascertained,” Ulrike Trumtar, spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony police in charge of the investigation, told AFP.

The police operation took place this morning in the district of Friedrichshain of East Berlin.

Former RAF member Daniela Klette, 65, was arrested in Berlin on 27 February after 30 years on the run.

Authorities charge Daniela Klette along with her partners Burkhard Gerweg and Essent-Föhler Staub with attempted murder and a series of armed robberies between 1999 and 2016.

The police estimate that it is highly likely that the two men are in or around Berlin and she has intensified her investigations. He has also released recent photos of Garveg with dogs.

Staub, Klette and Garweg belonged to the third generation of the RAF, which was active in the 1980s and 1990s.

Members of the third generation are believed to have murdered the head of Deutsche Bank Alfred Herrhausen and Treuhand, the agency tasked with managing and privatizing state assets in East Germany after German reunification, Detlef Rochwender.

In 1998 a statement signed by the RAF sent to Reuters announced the disbandment of the organisation.
